🏛️ Historical Overview

Originally known as Slepe, St Ives dates back to around AD 500. The town’s prominence grew in 1001 when a ploughman unearthed the remains of St Ivo, a Cornish bishop and hermit. This discovery led to the establishment of a priory by Eadnoth the Younger, a monk from Ramsey Abbey, and the town was subsequently renamed in honor of the saint .

By the 19th century, St Ives had become a bustling inland port and market town, boasting 64 pubs in 1838—approximately one for every 55 residents—catering to the many bargees who frequented the river .
